Hand lettering is the creative practice of drawing and illustrating text. It is often used to visualize a quote or other inspiring words. It can be found for example in advertising, on menus and on greeting cards. Hand lettering got popular a few decades ago, and has been around ever since. Especially for those who love to hand letter, the Hand lettering Happy Hours have been introduced!
What’s the difference?
Hand lettering is not the same as brush lettering or calligraphy. In fact, brush lettering is a form of hand lettering, if practiced in a certain way. The main difference between hand lettering and calligraphy, is that calligraphy is a way of writing, where as hand lettering is considered drawing. And drawing means there is an endless source of variations and possibilities! Hand lettering is, just like its name implies, a hand craft, and therefore always unique. It’s a great way to express your creativity in both text and art.
The hours
Come and join us for 2 hours of hand lettering practice! With some helpful tips and examples, you will practice your own unique style and create beautiful quotes on a postcard, book mark, envelop or any other paper you desire. Brush markers, paper, examples and a lot of other materials will be available for your creative outburst!
This will not be a class where you have to sit and listen for a long time; you will be jumping right in and will get tips and tricks along the way. While enjoying a refreshment and a snack, you will have a good time with other creatives and create some wonderful things!
While you’re working on your own piece, books and other examples will be available to get inspired. I will be assisting you with some practical tips and explanation about the basic principles of typography. You will experiment with different materials, like brush pens, fine liners, alcohol based markers and water color. The group will consists of a maximum of 8 participants, which ensures the comfortable, personal and easy going atmosphere Peace of Art always strives to offer.
You will be totally free to experiment in a way that feels good to you. At Peace of Art, we don’t believe in formats and rules. We believe that with some basic understanding of materials and principals, you are ready to get creative in your own unique way!
