A good way to overcome your hesitation or maybe even resistance to fill a blank page, is to give yourself extra options – by working on several pages simultaneously. This way you will feel more comfortable to experiment, and you will allow yourself more play. If one page doesn’t seem to work out, it will be the perfect one to try every other color, and every tool. If you mess another one up, you still have two left! Maybe it’s hard to believe, but it really works. You will not only overcome the fear of a blank page, you will also learn a lot from experimenting with different combinations of colors and tools!
- Get yourself 4 pieces of paper, preferably a variety of paper (newspaper, watercolorpaper, mixed media paper, old book page etc). Keep them close together, you want to continue spreading the paint, once you’re in a flow.
- If you work in journals, you might want to consider keeping more than one. You could use old books as an addition to your regular journal.
- Choose 4 colors to work with.
- Find those colors in various media, like water color, acrylic paint, Posca markers
- Get yourself a few extra tools. Brush, brayer, card, sticks.
- Apply some white, clear or black gesso to your page.
- If like the look of a ‘series’ you might want to use some washi tape to get straight edges.
- Start experimenting with just one rule in mind: try everything!
